Katherine is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. The capital of Northern Territory, Darwin, is 13 km south of Katherine and, as it is the largest city in the Northern Territory, many travelers choose to spend time in Darwin, rather than driving through Alice Springs. The municipality borders the Top End, a region of the Northern Territory that has been called the ‘Inland Empires’ because of the abundance of natural resources and the remoteness of its towns.

The Katherine region is a hub for job seekers and the base for many businesses. That is because the area is blessed with a large employment base and a strong economy, where the mining sector is still an important source of income for the community. The biggest employers in the Katherine region are government agencies such as NTDS, NT Wildlife and Katherine Land Council. There are other strong employers in the area as well, such as the Katherine Hospital, TAFE and the Tarcoola Dairy Farm. There is also a strong agricultural sector in the town, where people work in various roles such as dairy farmers, fruit pickers, grain producers, and other agri-jobs.

Katherine is one of Australia’s very few long-distance cattle stations. The station area (also known as the town) stretches for 500km along the Stuart Highway. It stretches across the vast Northern Territory, containing towns such as Katherine, Loowit, Nhulunbuy, Drysdale and Yentna Station. The landscape and weather can vary drastically between towns. The rainforest area is lush, warm and green, while the semi-arid part is dry, dusty, windy and cold. Katherine is also served by numerous domestic airports and can be accessed by bus, rail and taxi services.
