The Brisbane Valley is named after the Brisbane River, which runs through the region[2], despite the fact that substantial portions of the territory lay beyond the hydrological Brisbane Valley.

To combine the water catchments for the Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams, the Esk and Kilcoy Shires were merged. Somerset’s long-term future, according to the Local Government Reform Commission, will be as a significant water catchment for the SEQ area, with farming as the dominant economic activity under a water catchment management system. As a result, the Somerset Regional Council’s “planning strategy and land use policies” are “oriented to this aim.”

The most common employment in Somerset are labourers (17.8%), technicians and trades workers (14.9%), managers (13.9%), community and personal service workers (11.2%), and clerical and administrative workers (11.1%).

Somerset’s typical weekly personal income for persons aged 15 and above is $512.

Separate homes account for 96.4 % of occupied private residences in Somerse, while semi-detached, row or terrace houses, townhouses, and other buildings account for 1.0 %, flats or apartments account for 0.4 %, and other dwellings account for 1.2 %.
