Northern Grampians Shire, VIC

The Shire of Northern Grampians is a local government entity in Victoria’s Wimmera region, in the state’s western region. It includes the communities of Stawell, St Arnaud, Great Western, Marnoo, Glenorchy, Stuart Mill, Navarre, and Halls Gap, a tourist destination. It was created in 1995 when the City of Stawell, the Town of St Arnaud, the Shire of Stawell, the Shire of Kara Kara, and portions of the Shires of Wimmera, Dunmunkle, and Donald merged.

The Northern Grampians Shire Council governs and administers the Shire; its seat of local government and administrative hub is situated at the council headquarters in Stawell; the Shire also maintains a service facility in St Arnaud. The Shire is called after the region’s most prominent physical feature, The Grampians, and the fact that the northern portion of this feature occupies the LGA’s southern portion.
Agriculture, tourism, wine production, gold mining, brick manufacture, and meat production all contribute to the local economy.
