Glenelg Shire, VIC

Glenelg Shire is a local government area in Victoria’s Barwon South West district, in the state’s south-western corner. Casterton, Heywood, Merino, and Portland are all included in this municipality. Although a shire with the same name existed before the mid-1990s amalgamations, the present Shire was created in 1994 by the consolidation of the old Shire of Glenelg, the Shire of Heywood, and the City of Portland.

The Glenelg Shire Council governs and administers the Shire; its seat of local government and administrative hub is at the council offices in Portland, and it also maintains service centres in Casterton and Heywood. The Shire of Glenelg is named after the Glenelg River, a significant topographical feature that runs through it.
